A 2016 Ford Focus averaged AED 15,000 in our closed sales, which is scooter money for a compact hatchback. Asking prices on our current listings run from AED 10250 to AED 14000.

Which used Ford Focus year should you buy?

Check the gearbox before the year. Cars from roughly 2012 to 2018 were offered with a dry dual-clutch automatic that is the single biggest source of trouble on this model, and a well-maintained one behaves while a neglected one shudders in traffic. The 2015 facelift brought a better cabin and quieter body, and the 2019-onward car moved to a new platform and a conventional automatic — that is the one to buy if the budget reaches it.

Is a used Ford Focus reliable in the UAE?

Read the report, then decide. 42% of the Ford Focuses we inspect in the UAE show a mechanical fault in the engine, gearbox, suspension or steering, against the 26% we would expect for hatchbacks of the same age and mileage here, with electrical faults at 28% against 16%, body repair at 85% against 74% and interior staining at 54% against 44%. Cheap hatchbacks in this market are bought young, driven hard and repaired on a budget — the Ford Fiesta shows body repair at 94% against an expectation of 71%. That is the segment, not the model, and it is why the individual car's history is the only thing that matters.

Ford Focus or Volkswagen Golf?

The Volkswagen Golf costs a great deal more and is the better car — cleaner cabins too, with staining at 26% against an expectation of 36% — so if your budget stretches, stretch it. The Kia Rio costs a little more than the Focus, is duller to drive and simpler to own. The Focus is the driver's choice with the biggest homework requirement.

What to check on a used Ford Focus

  • The automatic gearbox — shudder at low speed on a dual-clutch car is the warning sign.
  • Suspension and steering for knocks and play.
  • Paint depth all round, to judge the standard of past repair.
