The MG 5 exists to answer one question: what is the cheapest new automatic saloon you can buy in the UAE? It is 4,607 mm long, has a 406-litre boot and drives through a CVT — unremarkable in every way except the price.
How much does the MG 5 cost in the UAE?
AED 50,658 for the Standard, the only version imported. That is compact-hatchback money for a full-size four-door with a proper boot, and it is the reason the car sells to fleets, families on a budget and anyone who needs four doors more than they need badge appeal.
MG 5 or Geely Emgrand?
The MG has the longer track record in this market and the more established parts supply, which on a budget saloon is worth more than any feature. It is also the roomier car in the back seat. The Geely Emgrand is the newer design with the better cabin materials and a more modern interior layout. If you can live with a smaller car, the MG 3 does the same job for less.
What does an MG 5 cost to run in the UAE?
Little enough that it is the point of the car. The 1.5 L engine and CVT are tuned for economy rather than pace, insurance is cheap, and there is nothing complicated to go wrong. Al Yousuf Motors is the UAE distributor and runs the workshops in Dubai and Sharjah, though the mechanical simplicity means independent garages handle the car without difficulty.
Does the MG 5 hold up as it ages?
Mechanically, better than its price suggests. Not one of the MG 5s CarSwitch inspects in the UAE has shown a mechanical fault — 0% against the 7% we would expect for sedans of the same age and mileage — and these are not young cars, sitting at a median of around 58,000 km. That is a segment observation rather than a guarantee, so the inspection report on the individual car is still what should decide the purchase.
Is a used MG 5 the better buy?
For most buyers, yes. A nearly new example generally runs around AED 35,000 to AED 40,000, roughly 33% below the new entry price and about AED 15,000 saved, and the inspection record above suggests the mechanical risk in buying used is lower here than the price would imply. The trade is the balance of the factory warranty.
Look at the used MG 5s listed now against the new price — on this car the saving is unusually large.
